Early Sport Specialisation: What the Evidence Says About Injury and Burnout

Highly specialised young athletes carry a measurably higher risk of overuse injury. Diversified participation is protective.

Defining specialisation

Most research uses a three-point scale: choosing a single main sport, quitting other sports to focus on it, and training more than eight months a year in that sport. Meeting all three classifies an athlete as highly specialised.

  • Training more hours per week than the athlete's age in years is repeatedly linked to raised injury risk.

Does it produce better athletes?

For most sports the answer is no. Retrospective studies of senior elite athletes generally find they played several sports through childhood and specialised in mid-to-late adolescence. Early specialisation is meaningfully advantageous mainly in early-peak sports such as gymnastics and figure skating.

Practical guidance

  • Aim for at least one to two months away from the main sport per year, and ideally three separated blocks of rest.
  • Encourage at least one contrasting second sport through to mid-adolescence.
  • Take at least one full day off organised sport per week.
  • Prioritise general strength and movement competence over sport-specific volume before peak height velocity.
