How to Build Athleticism in Young Athletes

Athleticism is not a personality trait. It is a set of trainable qualities, built through variety, repetition and time.

What athleticism actually is

Athleticism is the ability to move well in a range of situations: to accelerate, stop, change direction, jump, land, throw, and adapt to what the game presents. It sits underneath sport skill - a technically excellent footballer who cannot decelerate is limited by athleticism, not by football ability.

Because it is a combination of qualities, it is built by developing each of them rather than by any single training method.

Fundamental movement skills come first

Children who develop a broad movement vocabulary early learn new sport skills faster later, and are less likely to be limited by a movement they never learned. This is the highest-return investment in the primary school years.

  • Running, jumping, hopping, skipping, bounding.
  • Throwing, catching, striking.
  • Squatting, hinging, lunging, pushing, pulling, crawling, climbing.
  • Balancing, rotating, landing and stopping.

Variety beats specialisation early

Different sports load the body differently and demand different solutions. A young athlete who plays football, does athletics in the summer and swims in the winter accumulates a wider range of adaptations than one who plays football twelve months a year, and typically arrives at adolescence more athletic and less injured.

Most senior elite athletes played multiple sports as children. Early specialisation confers a reliable advantage in only a handful of early-peak sports.

Then add the trainable qualities

  • Strength: two sessions a week, year-round, progressed patiently.
  • Speed: short maximal sprints, fresh, all year.
  • Elasticity: jumping, hopping and bounding, progressed by stage.
  • Agility: change of direction and reactive drills with real decisions in them.
  • Conditioning: developed largely through the sport itself in most youth contexts.

The role of durability

The most athletic version of a young player is the one who is available. Time lost to preventable injury is time not spent developing, and repeated interruptions compound over years.

Load management, sleep, fuelling and consistent strength work are therefore not separate from athletic development, they are what makes it possible.

Playing the long game

Athleticism is built in years. The most useful question for a parent is not 'is this session hard enough?' but 'will they still be doing this, healthily, in three years?'. Athletes who train consistently from 10 to 16 arrive with a physical foundation that cannot be replicated by a hard six months at 17.
