Why bother at all
- It shows whether cycles are regular, which is a useful health signal in a training teenager.
- It makes symptom days predictable rather than a monthly surprise.
- It gives a GP real information instead of best guesses.
- It lets her plan around difficult days without a difficult conversation each time.
The simplest version that works
Record the first day of bleeding, a word or two on symptoms, a one-to-five score for energy, and a one-to-five score for how training felt. That is it, and it takes about ten seconds a day.
After three months, look at the pattern across months rather than any single day. Patterns are useful, individual days are noise.

What to record, and what to leave out
Apps or a note on her phone?
Either works. Apps make patterns easy to see, but check what the app does with the data and choose one where information stays private and is not sold on. A note in her phone is genuinely enough and shares nothing with anyone.
Cycle predictions in apps are estimates, especially in the first years when cycles are still settling.
Privacy and consent
- It is her data, and she decides who sees it.
- Sharing with a parent or clinician should be a choice, not a default.
- A coach does not need cycle details, only whether today should be lighter.
- No club or squad should require tracking or collect it centrally for young athletes.
When tracking stops being helpful
If it becomes another performance metric to score herself on, or feeds anxiety about her body, stop the detailed version and keep only the date of each period. That alone gives the health signal that matters.
The one thing to watch for
Cycles that become long and gappy, or stop for three months, are the reason to keep any record at all. That is a GP appointment, and worth asking about energy availability, bone health and iron.
