Multi-sport is the right default
Playing several sports through childhood and into mid-adolescence is associated with broader movement skill, lower rates of early specialisation-related overuse injury, and a lower likelihood of dropping out. Most retrospective studies of senior elite athletes find diverse early sporting backgrounds, with early-peak sports such as gymnastics and diving as clear exceptions.
The problem is not the variety. It is that each club sees only its own slice of the athlete's week, and no one adds up the total. A child doing five hours of football, three of athletics and two of school PE is doing ten hours of organised sport, and nobody involved knows that.
Count everything first
Before deciding whether the load is appropriate, build an honest picture. Count all organised activity: club training, school PE, matches, fixtures, squad sessions, private coaching. Informal play in the park is generally not the issue and does not need the same accounting.

Two rules of thumb worth using
The first is the hours-versus-age guide: weekly hours of organised sport that exceed the child's age in years is associated with a higher rate of overuse injury in the youth sport literature. A 12-year-old doing more than 12 hours a week warrants a closer look. It is not a precise threshold, but it is a useful conversation starter.
The second is the ratio guide: more hours of organised sport per week than hours of free play, and more than eight to nine months a year in a single sport, both track with higher injury rates. Neither rule is a law of physics, they are flags for review.

The overlap problem
Two sports are not automatically better than one. What matters is whether they load the same tissues in the same way. Football and athletics sprinting both hammer the heel and knee extensor mechanism; football and swimming do not.
This is why a child playing football, rugby and doing athletics may be at higher risk than one playing football and swimming, despite the same total hours. When mapping the week, note the demand, not just the sport name.

Practical rules for a busy household
- One person keeps the master calendar of all sport, including school.
- At least one complete rest day every week, protected in advance.
- No more than one high-impact competitive event per day.
- Avoid two full competition days back to back where possible.
- Aim for one to two months off each individual sport per year, staggered rather than simultaneous.
- Increase total weekly load by no more than roughly 10-20% week to week.
Talking to clubs
Coaches generally respond well to information and poorly to unexplained absences. Sharing the full weekly picture, 'she also trains Tuesday and competes Sunday' - usually results in sensible adjustments, because most coaches have no wish to be the reason an athlete gets injured.
Where a club is unwilling to flex during a growth spurt or a symptomatic period, that is useful information about the environment, and worth weighing against what the athlete gets from being there.
When to drop something
Signs the total is too high
Recurring niggles in the same site, symptoms that reappear every time load increases, persistent fatigue, disrupted sleep, or a drop in enthusiasm for a sport the athlete previously loved. Reduce total volume first, and only cut a whole sport if reduction is not possible.
