Returning to School Sport After the Holidays: How to Safely Build Training Back Up

The first three weeks back are the highest-risk period of the school year. A short ramp-up before term starts changes how that period goes.

Why the first weeks back are risky

Over a long holiday, most young athletes do far less running, jumping and change of direction than during term. Tissue tolerance follows the load it is given, so after six weeks of reduced activity, capacity has drifted down.

Term then restarts with PE lessons, club training, school fixtures, trials and often a tournament, all in the same week. The athlete goes from a low baseline to a full week in a single step. That step, rather than any individual session, is what produces the familiar early-term cluster of heel pain, knee pain and shin soreness.

The size of the jump is the risk factor. Preparation reduces the step, not the destination.

A three-week ramp before term

  1. Week 1

    Reintroduce movement

    Three sessions: easy running 10-15 minutes, bodyweight strength twice, plus low-level hopping and skipping. Nothing maximal.

  2. Week 2

    Add intensity, not volume

    Short accelerations at 70-80%, change of direction drills, continued strength work. Running time up modestly.

  3. Week 3

    Rehearse the sport

    One session that looks like a training session - sport-specific work, some competitive elements, full warm-up routine.

  4. Term week 1

    Cap the total

    Skip optional extras in the first week. Add the second club session or fixture load from week two onwards.

If the ramp-up did not happen

Most families read this after term has already started. That is workable, the principle just shifts from preparation to triage. For the first two weeks, treat one high-load activity per day as the ceiling, and avoid stacking a full PE lesson, a club session and a fixture into the same 24 hours.

Prioritise the sessions that matter: a trial or a match is worth more than an optional extra training session. Dropping the extras for a fortnight costs very little and protects the sessions that count.

  • Warm up properly even for PE - it is often the least prepared, highest-intensity activity of the week.
  • Check footwear before term: worn-out boots and trainers are a routine contributor to heel pain.

The 24-hour rule for symptoms

The most useful monitoring tool for growing athletes is how they feel the morning after. Mild soreness that settles within 24 hours means the dose was acceptable. Pain that is worse the next morning, or that changes how they walk, run or land, means the dose was too high.

That framework works for heel, knee and back symptoms alike, and it gives young athletes a way to make sensible decisions themselves rather than depending on an adult being present.

What to keep in during the ramp

  • Two strength sessions a week, they should never be the thing that gets cut.
  • Calf and heel work if there is any history of Sever's disease.
  • Quadriceps and hip strength if there is a history of knee pain.
  • Sleep routines re-established before term, not during it.
  • A conversation with the coach about the athlete's actual training history over the break.

For athletes returning from a symptomatic summer

Different starting point

If heel or knee symptoms were present over the holidays, do not use the generic ramp. Start from what the athlete can currently do without a next-day increase in symptoms, add roughly 10-20% a week, and get an assessment if progress stalls for more than two weeks.
