Why Do Some Young Athletes Develop Faster Than Others?

Four reasons athletes diverge

In a squad of same-age children, the spread in size, strength and skill is often enormous. That spread comes from four broadly separable sources, and it is worth knowing which is which before drawing conclusions about a child's potential.

Maturity timing does most of the visible work

An early-maturing 13-year-old may be most of the way through their growth spurt, carrying adult-like muscle mass and hormone levels. A late-maturing 13-year-old may not have started. On a pitch, that gap is decisive, and it is temporary.

The important point is that early maturity is not talent. It is a head start that closes. Studies following selected youth players into adulthood repeatedly find that the physical advantage of early maturers dissolves in late adolescence, and that late maturers who stayed in the system are strongly represented at senior level.

The relative age effect

Youth sport groups children by birth year or school year. A child born just after the cut-off can be almost 12 months older than a teammate, around 8% more life experience and development at age 12. Those children are picked more often, given more coaching and more competitive minutes, and the advantage compounds.

The effect is measurable across almost every popular youth sport and is strongest at the highest levels of youth competition. Combine it with early maturity and you have a child who looks exceptional at 12 for reasons that will not last.

Genetics: the part nobody controls

Adult height is heavily inherited, and so is the timing of puberty, a child's growth pattern usually resembles their parents' more than their teammates'. Response to training also varies genetically: put ten adolescents on the same programme and their strength gains will differ substantially, with no dishonesty or lack of effort involved.

This is worth saying plainly to young athletes. Comparing your development curve to someone else's is comparing two different starting hands.

Training history: the part that is actually modifiable

  • Years of varied movement experience - climbing, sprinting, throwing, swimming, gymnastics-style work.
  • A consistent strength habit from around 10-12 in an age-appropriate form.
  • Coaching that teaches landing, deceleration and change of direction as skills.
  • Enough recovery and off-season to allow adaptation rather than accumulation.
  • Continuity, staying available to train is the single largest driver of long-term progress.

How to read a slow developer

A late-maturing athlete is frequently the more technically capable player, because they have had to solve problems with skill and positioning rather than size. Once their growth and strength arrive, that skill base does not disappear, it combines with new physical capacity.

The practical risk is not physical. It is dropout: being consistently overlooked at 13 and 14 leads plenty of capable athletes to walk away before their development lands.

What to protect

For a late-maturing athlete, the priority is staying in a good training environment and continuing to enjoy the sport. Selection at 13 is not a verdict on adult potential - availability, consistency and enjoyment are far better predictors.

Practical guidance for parents

  • Track your child against their own previous months, not the biggest player in the team.
  • Ask clubs whether they account for maturity and birth month in selection.
  • Keep more than one sport going through mid-adolescence.
  • Treat strength work as normal, not as something reserved for older athletes.
  • Frame development over a three-year horizon in conversations at home.
